Summer Road Trip, Stop #1: Indianapolis, Indiana

My quest to visit more state capitols brought me to the Midwest this summer. Indiana, known as “The Crossroads of America,” became my 25th state capitol visit. Completed in 1888, the Indiana State Capitol features a magnificent stained-glass inner dome unlike anything I have seen before. The ornate painting and stonework throughout the building were equally impressive.

One of the most unexpected discoveries was a beautifully preserved phone booth, complete with an actual working phone! Walking through the different floors also offered impressive views of the grand atrium. I even saw a couple taking engagement photos – something fitting given the building’s beauty.

The Capitol is located downtown near several other attractions. While I spent some time in the area, I visited the Indiana State Library, the beautiful Downtown Canal walk, the 9/11 memorial, and the Indiana State Museum.

The weather was perfect for exploring on foot. I happened to visit on a weekday, and the city felt relaxed, easy to navigate, and not crowded. Perhaps I need to spend more time in the Midwest and explore further!
